PSHE
We are coming to the end of our first unit - Being Me - and for the past 2 weeks, we have been exploring Democracy and British Values. This week, we looked in particular at how our daily life at school is influenced by democracy and how each pupil in the class has a role to fulfil. We know that the children have lots of empathy and lots of in-depth knowledge of each but it was a real surprise to see how quickly they organised each other to fit the roles of: nurturer, organiser, problem solver, encourager and ideas people and how little disagreement this caused - what a great bunch of children they are!
LIBRARY VAN
The library van turned up Friday morning and this time it was the job of Year 6 to find the 50 books from the library to exchange. Following the selection, they had a discussion around who should visit the van as only 3 were allowed and they used their skills from PSHE to find the fair selection. So we now have a new stock of exciting library books to supplement our book band books. It was great to see the different selections chosen and how their recent and upcoming learning was reflected in this. They chose Benjamin Zephaniah stories inspired by their poetry work during Black History Month, they chose historically inspired books from the Victorian era and a selection of geographical books to support our upcoming enquiry about Rainforests. They also chose some dyslexia friendly books printed with yellow pages as they know some of their peers use coloured overlays to support reading.
PRIMARY FUTURES
We are joining the Primary Futures team on Tuesday for a STEM inspired session all about aviation. It will follow the familiar pattern of the children asking Yes/No questions following the clue provided to find out which jobs the volunteers have. We are looking forward to another brilliant morning and finding out more about jobs in aviation.
Have a lovely weekend,

Another week has gone by in Landaviddy class. And what a week it has been!
On Wednesday, we learnt about the famous author and olympian, Ibtihaj Muhammad, in celebration of Black History month. We created some fantastic posters, ready for our annual Black History assembly, where we will share our posters with the school. In Art, we continued practising our sketching and shading skills. We began by creating botanical drawings from our observations of plants and flowers we found outside. Then, using viewfinders, sketched varying parts of flowers to create a plan for a piece of abstract art.
In Maths, we have continued exploring addition and subtraction. Year 2 have been using concrete objects to support their understanding of exchanging, when crossing 10s. Year 3 have been focussing on using the column method with accuracy this week, taking great care with our presentation.
In English, we finished off our plans for writing non-chronological reports on owls. We spent today's lesson writing our first drafts, which required a lot of determination! I can't wait to see your final reports next week!
Congratulations to Amber and Hector for being Landaviddy's People of the Week! And a big well done to Rosie for achieving her 99 club!
We hope you have a super weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday for our last week before half term!

This week we were extremely excited to welcome Toby Gorniak MBE (a well-renowned street dancer, choreographer and mentor), along with his student 'AMR' to Brunel.
He firstly delivered an inspiring whole-school assembly whereby he discussed five elements to a happy, meaningful life: respect, peace, love, unity and having fun! He also explained why dancing has been so important in his life and so beneficial to him as a person.
Talland's excitement grew as we were the last workshop of the day - and boy were we not disappointed! We were taught some warm up techniques, a routine including some of the most recognisable step-types in street dancing, as well as 'breaking'. We finished our session with a group movement routine and Toby and AMR wowed us with some more of their amazing moves! It was such an inspiring, wonderful day: we've not been so happy to be so exhausted before!

This week, Talland took part in the whole school celebration of Mental Health Awareness Day 2024. They were channelling sunshine vibes in their yellow clothing and accessories.
We undertook a wide range of relaxing activities including mindfulness colouring, a reflective session focussing on our emotions, as well as watching some tutorials guiding us through calming techniques.
Later in the day we took a walk, scanning our surroundings using our senses. We heard Jane cooking in the kitchen, birds tweeting and the crunchy leaves under our feet. We smelt freshly cut grass and Jane's roast! The gravel in the garden felt great to walk on, as well as sounding good. Of course, we were spoilt for choice of nice things to look at walking around our grounds: trees, flowers, squirrels and birds were some highlights.
To top off the day, we finished with some chick therapy! Sitting round in a circle, we let the chicks out for a roam around: both the chicks and children seemed to enjoy their first proper encounter! The children agreed that stroking their soft, downy heads was a very satisfying, comforting feeling - a lovely way to end the day!

Hello Everyone,
We have had a wonderful week of writing this week. Reception have been busy writing captions and acting out the story of the little red hen, while Year 1 have started to learn all about the features of instruction writing. They have also completed their own poems, based on the Allan Ahlberg poem; 'Peepo'. Thank you to Hugh, who brought in his own copy of the book from home, and read it to the whole class.
In our RE lessons this week, we have been learning all about how to look after our world. We went into the school garden to make sure that all of our plants are well cared for. We also read stories, with a conservation theme, and discussed examples of how we can care for our environment.
Year 1 have really enjoyed using the ipads in maths today, to increase their fluency in addition and subtraction. Meanwhile, Reception had a great time getting active with their maths in the hall. They were learning about the composition of 1,2,3,4 and 5, by throwing bean bags into hoops, and zooming around on wheels to make different numbers to 5.
Have a lovely weekend!
From the Penhallow team.

This week has been all about keeping healthy with the help of Supertato and all his vegetable friends!
We enjoyed some of the stories and had lots of vegetable themed activities.
Understanding the importance of healthy eating even at this young age is about installing those good dietary habits that they can carry with them as they grow. We also used this week's theme to talk about other ways to keep happy and healthy, such as good sleep and staying active.
To enhance our learning to be healthy we have enjoyed putting together our own ideas of a healthy packed lunch. The children were all very good at putting together balanced healthy options with a mixture of fruits and vegetables too, and then the option to add an unhealthy item that lots of them referred to as a treat.
From this we talked about how each food group is important because each group has special nutrients that not only help us grow big and strong but help our brains to grow with all the important learning that they do.
We have stayed active this week by being outside when the weather has allowed and enjoying some hungry caterpillar themed yoga during the week too!
On Thursday some of the children were lucky enough to join Lantic class and Miss Edwards during their outdoor learning day. They enjoyed the story of ‘Leaf Man’ before searching for their own interesting objects to make pictures, then they joined Mr Knight to toast marshmallows on the campfire. The children had a lovely time and were brilliant at listening to the other adults.
Next week is our final week of Autumn Term 1, we will be enjoying some early Halloween themed activities. Please do not forget that our final day is Thursday.
School and Pre-School are closed for Inset day on Friday 25th October 2024.
We return to Pre-School on Monday 4th November 2024
We hope everyone has a lovely weekend,
The Pre-School Team.

Break time on Thursday was showtime. Some of the children in Tregeagle class have been preparing a show complete with ticketing and seating for the rest of the school. Thankfully the weather was perfect for the performance which went without a hitch. Another group of children will be preparing a performance for after half term. Photos attached below.
Foodbank
We finished off the week with a visit from the Foodbank. The children found out about the work the Foodbank does in helping communities and they had a chance to join in with a cooking demonstration. Thank you to the parents who joined us at the end of the day, we hope this was a useful visit and provided inspiration for cooking together at home.
Online Safety
Throughout the school year we will be working with the children to help them develop the life skills and knowledge they need to use the online world safely and with confidence. The following websites also provide helpful information about staying safe online:
https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/ how to let your child make the most of the internet while remaining safe.
https://www.childnet.com/ Childnet International is a non-profit organisation working with others to help make the internet a great and safe place for children.
https://www.ceop.police.uk/Safety-Centre/ If you are worried about online abuse or the way someone has been communicating online let CEOP know. If you have any questions about how to support your child in staying safe online, please don’t hesitate to contact school.

Another week has flown by and we have been writing up our narrative in English. We will continue next week as our stories are reaching their resolution. In Maths, the Y6s are investigating long multiplication and short division whilst the Y5s have been learning to apply the inverse operation to check their calculations.
Wider Curriculum
Chaipel have been learing about the significance of Roman Baths for leisure as well as for health and relaxation. We have learnt how to use Binary texts in ICT and about the importance of the Hajj pilgrimage to Muslims in RE. In Art, we have planned our final piece which we will create next week.
Roman Day
A letter went home today (and via email) regarding our Roman Day on Thursday. Please take time to read the letter and let Miss Randle know if you have any allergies to the food that is listed. We will be taking part in Gladiator battles, feasting on tradional Roman food, making jewellery and then re-enacting the eruption of Mount Vesuvius thanks to Lily's volcano she has brought in as part of her homework activity grid.
Spooky Disco
Don't forget the disco on Thursday!
Tickets are on sale at reception.

What a wonderful afternoon we had at our 40th birthday celebration event. Looe Primary Academy moved from its old site down in West Looe to its new site 40 years ago in November. We could not resist the opportunity to celebrate the event. It was a bit of an impromptu reunion for some of the previous staff including Mr Trethowan who was the Headteacher at the time that the school moved and Mr Wardle who was the Headteacher here not too long ago. We wanted as many organisations in town to join us as possible and we we so pleased that we had so many join us - far too many to mention here! We were very lucky with the weather and although it got a little cold towards the end, we all enjoyed everything that was on offer. We are raising money for some new play equipment for both of our play areas and we have made a very good start to add to the money that we have already raised. Thank you to everyone who made the day successful. The children raised over £670 with their social enterprise projects, so thank you to them all too. It was certainly a day to feel proud!

We have been making the most of harvest time by collecting and learning with apples. We learnt about the life cycle of an apple tree, we painted with apples, we dissected apples and looked at them under magnifying glasses. We even cooked delicious apple crumble and got to taste it during our Friday morning snack time!
Literacy
Now that we are few weeks into our phonics programme, we kindly ask you to practise their sounds lots and lots at home. By practising saying the sounds and doing the actions daily or a few times a week, the children will become more familiar and confident with them. This helps them to build up their quick recognition of the sounds. Every week, a letter formation sheet is stuck into your child’s Home Learning Phonics Book and an information sheet on every sound will be sent home. Again, by practising forming these letters at home, the children will become more fluent and confident.
Maths
Last week, we were learning to count carefully with both objects and then pictures. The children have been learning to put their objects in a neat line to help them count carefully and accurately without getting in a muddle. When counting pictures that cannot be moved, the children have been using their pointy finger to help them to count. We have been using the apples at the maths table to help facilitate object counting. See if they can show you their awesome, careful counting at home.
This week, we have been learning all about the numbers: 1, 2 and 3! We have been learning to recognise these numbers using a range of concrete and pictorial resources. We have also been subitising these numbers.
For the last week of this half term, we will be learning all about pumpkins! We’re so proud of how well the children have settled into school throughout their first half term. It’s been a long one full of lots of learning! We look forward to seeing many of you next week at the parent teacher consultations.
Have a great weekend,
The Reception Team

We are excited to share with you what the children have been learning over the past two weeks in Year 5. It’s been a busy and productive time!
Maths
In Maths, the children have been focusing on Multiplication and Division. They’ve worked hard on consolidating their understanding of multiplication tables and have begun learning efficient strategies for solving division problems. We’ve also explored the relationship between the two operations, helping the children to see how multiplication and division are connected.
English
In English, the students have been exploring Film Narratives. They’ve been analysing a short film all about a time traveller, identifying key features such as plot structure, character development, and themes. The children have particularly enjoyed discussing how the film tells a story through both visual and spoken language, and they are beginning to draft their own creative narratives based on these ideas.
History
The children have continued their learning about ancient Egypt, focusing specifically on Tutankhamun and the role of the River Nile in Egyptian civilisation. They’ve been fascinated by the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and have explored how the Nile was vital for farming, transport, and trade in ancient times.
Black History Month
As part of Black History Month celebrations, the children have learned about influential Black figures throughout history. They’ve engaged in discussions about the importance of equality and diversity and have been inspired by the stories of people who have made significant contributions to society.
We are proud of the children’s engagement and enthusiasm as well as their continued progress.
We look forward to seeing many of you at parents evening next week...
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 team.

The House Captains met with Mrs Orme this week to discuss ideas for House events. These included: an author visit where children pose ideas for stories; obstacle course; TTRS House Competition; a week long readathon; get caught reading competition; design a poster for your House, and a positive vibe art competition. Watch this space to find out which House event we will be doing next half term!
School Council – This Year’s Charity
The School Council recently presented three different charities to their classes and then led a democratic vote to decide which charity we would support this year. The most votes went to Newquay Zoo’s Wild Planet Trust, a conservation organisation that works to stop the decline of species.
Eco Council – Soft Plastic Challenge
On Monday, our Eco Council stood up in front of assembly to talk about their new challenge for the school. They reminded everyone of the different objects that can be recycled and which containers to put them in. The challenge is to see which year group can collect the most soft plastic to stop this going to landfill. The winning year group will receive an extra breaktime. The soft plastic will be weighed at the end of half term and all of it will be going to Tesco to be recycled.

Black History Month
October marks Black History Month in the UK. Mrs Orme launched Black History Month with an assembly explaining how, when and why it was introduced, and why it is important to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture. Children have been following this with learning about significant black people in their classes and some wonderful work has been produced to display in school. On Tuesday, every class joined a live online assembly, along with over 100 other primary schools. It was delivered by Katie Harrison from Picture News and BBC Radio 1 Xtra presenter, Swarzy Macaly, to explore this year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, and the power of shared stories and perspectives.

What an exciting week it's been! The highlight of the week came on Thursday when we were lucky to take part in a street dance workshop run by Toby G. Tregantle children were amazing at learning the moves and showed great focus and attention while learning to street dance. This session was followed by a singing workshop provided by Cornwall Music Service. The children learnt some great songs about the story 'The Princess and the Pea' which they will be performing along with some other local schools in a few weeks.
Our Year 1 children have had an amazing week of swimming lessons. They have visited Saltash Leisure Centre every afternoon and their confidence has grown massively in the water. The swimming instructors commented on their commitment and progress over the week - Well done Tregantle!

What a week of swimming we have had! The children are like fish in the water... amazing!
We all LOVED the street dance lessons with Toby G! We have got some cool moves - perhaps your child could show you some of the things we learnt?
When not swimming and dancing, we have been reading a book called 'Coming to England' by Floella Benjamin. I (Mrs Stevens), remember watching her on Playschool when I was a little girl. We have been learning about her journey from Trinidad to Southampton to be with her parents. Back then, people were unkind to her because they hadn't seen a black person in school before. We discussed whether that was OK. The children all agreed that treating people unkindly was wrong.
