Welcome to our new Year 6 bloggers: Verity, Joel and Ava.
It's another busy week in Chaipel. We have finished writing up our newspaper report best copies and they all look amazing! In Maths, the Y5s have finished place value and are now onto adding and subtracting, whilst the Y6s are learning the rules of divisibility.
Chaipel have enjoyed learning about what causes a tsunami in Geography and who Boudica was, and her influence over the Roman invasion of Britain. Did you know 'tsunami' means 'harbour wave' in Japanese? - VERITY
In ICT, we are learning about the Mars Rover and have been creating instructions for sending data from Mars back to Earth. Recently, we were lucky enough to have a visit from George Orwell's son who we will be working with on an exciting project in the Spring term. More information to follow...
We have been experimenting with tinting and shading in Art, and been looking at atmospheric landscapes. They look fab!
We've had another fabulous Funky Friday, listening to music and dancing our hearts out at lunchtime. - AVA
On Wednesday, our Readers of the Week were Lily and Phoebe, our Writers of the Week were Aria and Max B for their newspaper reports and our Mathematicians of the Week were Kora and Harrison. A big well done to those guys!
Today some amazing people came in to show us the boat that they will be sailing across the Atlantic in, later on this year. We learnt that two people would row whilst the other two would sleep or eat. We wish them lots of luck and hope to follow their adventure! - JOEL
Have a fab weekend!

We
had a busy but an amazing start to Week 4!
On Monday 23rd September, the boys
went to the Royal Cornwall Show Ground for ‘Boys Active’ and on Tuesday 24th
September the girls went there for ‘Our girls can’. They all had a wonderful
time engaging in a range of activities lead by sports leaders from the
secondary school. From archery to tag rugby, to mountain biking, it is
safe to say the day were packed with fun and laughter.
On Friday 27th September, the
children participated in the Macmillan coffee morning, raising money for the
charity. The children decorated the hall, brought cakes, make bookmarks and
had the chance to beat their parents at games. It was a lovely morning shared
by all! Below is a comment from Lexie in 6B:
Today we ran the Macmillan coffee morning, we
made money for the charity by selling bookmarks and coasters our class had
made. Some people even volunteered and made extra things like scrunchies, pins,
and pumpkin teddies. All these contributions were topped off with lots of homemade
cakes and sweet treats, as well as coffees and teas specially made by our
classes. We thoroughly enjoyed this event from the board games to the quizzes
to the talking and hanging out with our parents. This is definitely an excellent
event that we would love to be involved in again. We know how much our
community appreciate our hard work and efforts!
That evening the fun continued with our Year 6
camp out. All the children came back to school dressed in their PJ’s. We played
games, had fish and chips, watched a movie with sweeties and FINALLY went to
sleep. It was such an amazing evening and will certainly by a memory that we
will cherish forever.
English
Over the past two weeks, we have started our
new learning journey of Poetry. In this journey, the children will explore a
range of grammatical skills and knowledge to create their own poems that enhance
imagery. The journey is based on the text Rose Blanche by Ian McEwan. So far,
in the journey, the children have used their VIPERS skills to explore the text,
studied the key features and created their own word banks using figurative
language.
Maths
In Maths, we have begun our addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division learning journey. The children have
looked at common factors, common multiples, rules of divisibility and primes to
100. During the lessons, the foundational skills needed have been times tables
and the importance of having fluency in them has been highlighted.
Please continue to encourage your children to
access TTRS at home. The magic number for TTRS according
to them is 21... 21+ minutes of TTRS a week to really promote recall of tables
(just over 4 minutes per school day!)
Wider
Curriculum
In Wider Curriculum, the children have
continued their history journey. Most recently, the children looked at end of
the war. They researched into the lead up to D-Day and how VE day came around.
As a result, the children created their own newspaper reports where they showed
off what they had learnt.
The excitement around this topic has been
amazing, we have had so many children share some wonderful facts and learning
from home!
Next up is Art, we are looking forward to
creating some perspective drawing pieces for our displays. WATCH THIS SPACE.
Another brilliant few weeks in Year Six,
Best Wishes,

Thank
you for your generosity in donations for the Liskeard and Looe foodbank last week.
All your items have been collected by the Foodbank and they were incredibly grateful
for the kindness shown.
A
massive thank you also for attending the Harvest Festival service at Cuby’s in
such numbers. Class 2 did an amazing job leading the service and it was
wonderful seeing our school community come together again.

What a busty week we have had!
We have been making and preparing for our Looe Primary 40th
Birthday celebration today and the children have worked so hard! On our stall
we will have all that they have made to sell. We will upload pictures on Monday for you
to see, after the event!
The children have been exploring and learning so much this
week.
In phonics the children have learnt the diagraph (two letters,
one sound) CK and the sounds e/u/ and r. They have been amazing in phonics, and
we are really beginning to see progress with their oral blending to read small
words!
The children have also been using water colours to paint,
sorting monsters into different groups, using their funky fingers to cut out
pictures to make a picture of all the things they like and using felt tips to
decorate a person.
In English the children have been trying to perfect their
tripod grip when holding a pencil. The children drew a picture of their
favourite part of the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. The children are progressing
well with the tripod grip and once they have mastered this their writing and
drawing skills will be even more amazing!
On COOL time ( Choose Our Own Learning) the children have
chosen the marble run a lot and it has been amazing to see and hear them
working together to make a marble run, we have heard so much wonderful vocabulary
from the children to solve problems! They were so impressed and happy when the
marble reached the bottom!
On Thursday we were lucky to have a visit form Pop Up Play.
The children loved exploring the toys and resources. There was a vets, hospital,
baby nursery, supermarket, fire and police station and a construction site! Miss
Hughes and Janet seemed to be WANTED a lot and ended up in the police van!!!!
It was a wonderful morning!
We have explored so much more this week and it’s been a
wonderful week
We look forward to seeing you all later at the celebration!
Have a lovely weekend

We have had another fun packed week at Team Brunel! It has been a super busy week with our Nursery children visiting St. Anne's, our Year 1 and 2 children following instructions to make marmalade sandwiches, our Year 3 and 4 children taking part in a Guinness World Record on National Poetry Day, new chick arrivals in Year 5 and Year 6 writing letters to Michael Morpurgo; it has been yet another incredible week at our wonderful school.
In addition, the whole school community have been getting excited about our Terracycling campaign! Our bin has been emptied twice this week and we have featured in the local paper. If you missed the article you can read it here:

Over the last couple of weeks we have continued to look at farms and in geography year 1 have been looking at some of the farms local to Lanlivery and what sort of farming happens there. The pre-school children have been making the most of the first signs of autumn with the leaves falling off the trees. They have collected a variety of leaves which they have crafted with and even gave some of the green ones to the class pet stick insects. The reception children have been spotting patterns in the environment, continuing patterns and creating their own patterns. The children also made some amazing fluffy sheep.

This Friday, marks our celebratory afternoon. Families are welcome to pick their children up from 2:00pm for the festivities and there will be plenty for us and all of the local community to enjoy, from bouncy castles to class stalls and an ice cream van.
Our class will also be doing a special performance with Sally Butlin and their ukuleles on the main stage at 3:30pm. A reminder that they should head to the front of the stage area for 3:25 and the show will last approximately 10 minutes.
We can’t wait to see you all!

It has been another great week for Marazion class. We have celebrated National Poetry Day 2024 by taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the world's largest poetry lesson!
In maths, we have continued to work on place value and year 3 have just began their journey with addition and subtraction where they worked with key vocabulary and have applied number bonds within 10 ready to use their key knowledge across hundreds soon.
In Geography, we learnt about different volcanoes, where they are in the world and what 'active', 'dormant' and 'extinct' volcanoes are.
We enjoyed learning more cricket skills with Cricket Chris and dodging skills in PE (netball).
In Science, we've been learning about three different types of rock (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) and how they are formed. We've already modelled some in edible form and are learning a song, with actions to help us remember. So this week we're going to put on our safety specs and investigate which rock would make the best statue.
On Thursday, we learn about Harvest ahead of our Harvest Assembly on Monday.
The children have been developing their SHAPE for learning well-can they tell you what this means?
On Thursday next week, we are celebrating Mental Health Awareness day where they children are welcome to wear something yellow and we will be exploring different ways of keeping mindful.
Also, a copy of the poem and a thank you letter are in the files below - each child will get a paper copy of these to have!

The children have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm and curiosity towards learning. During the first few weeks in school, we noticed that many children showed an interest in learning more about animals. So, last week, we read ‘Owl Babies’ and learned some facts about owls. The children were able to use vocabulary to describe owls such as nocturnal, talons and owlets. This week, we have been learning about animals that hibernate and have enjoyed the story ‘Don’t Hog the Hedge’.
Literacy
We have now learned 8 sounds in our phonics lessons and the children have been keen to learn more sounds and actions. We have been practising our ‘robot talking’ to blend short words. It’s been lovely to see them choosing to practise their letter formation in COOL time. In their writing books, the children have applied their understanding by identifying and writing the initial sounds of words.
Maths
Last week, we focused on matching objects. The children showed real confidence in matching objects, whether that be matching based on shape, colour, size or pattern. This week, we have been thinking about the different way we can group objects.
Next week, we are learning all about apples! We will be exploring the life cycle of an apple, developing our vocabulary linked to apples, investigating what we find on the inside of apples, using our observational skills to create apple paintings, using apples to explore printing and creating repeating patterns with paints and much, much more. If anyone knows of any local apple trees or if you find yourself going out and about this weekend where apples trees are, we would really appreciate lots of apples being brought into school on Monday morning for our wonderful activities!
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Best wishes,
The Reception Team

We had a lovely visit today from children's book author Sally Crabtree, who we will be working with tomorrow for National Poetry Day. She read us books and sang us songs. We then designed our own magic rings to wear on the train tomorrow. We imagined that we were on a magic train and pictured what we could see out of the windows. Some of us went to magic fairy land, others to cookie world and some of us saw dragons and unicorns! We will be turning these images into a book on the train tomorrow.

What a fantastic start the school year. The children in Year One are settling in so well and are showing so many of our school values through their work and play.
Our first 'Big Question' is 'Where on Earth are we?'. We have been learning to find the United Kingdom on maps and globes and have been learning some key facts about the four countries that make it up. We have also learnt about the county that we live in and how to find it on a map of the UK.
In the last week we have begun 'The Big Brush Club'. This is an NHS initiative to help improve children's oral health. The children have really enjoyed having a brush-along to Hey Duggee or Danny Go's tooth-brushing songs. They are getting used to the routines and know how to keep their toothbrushes clean.
In art, the children have been using their sketchbooks to try out drawing different kinds of line. They have looked at the work of Maurice Sendak (author and illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are) and have thought about how he uses different kinds of line to show the texture of hair, scales, teeth and claws. The children also did some printing with autumnal colours in order to enter the art competition at Callington Honey Fair.
We have been learning about materials in science and have been learning some of the more scientific vocabulary we can use to describe their properties such as transparent, opaque, absorbent, flexible and rigid.
The children have continued to love our daily Drawing Club sessions. These magical sessions allow the children to enjoy wonderful stories, learn some new vocabulary and write number and sentences codes in order to bring aspects of their drawings to life. It is so much fun and the children are wonderful code-creators.
In maths we have thoroughly explored numbers to 10. Through out 'Mastering Number' sessions we have practised subitising and partitioning skills and through our mathematics sessions we have learnt to read, write, order, compare and draw numbers on the number line. This is an excellent foundation for our next step into addition and subtraction.
In our COOL time (Choose Our Own Learning), many of the children have particularly enjoyed creating their own wonderful settings using the wooden blocks. The have created homes for the Wizard from one of our stories and many different animal homes. Their verbal explanations have been so detailed and so much thought has gone into the way they have been built. It has been great to watch the children work so cooperatively and communicate so well to share their ideas for moving the models forwards.

Today the children in Year 2 went on a wonderful trip on the train from Looe to Liskeard. This was part of a poetry project funded by Great Western Railways. During the day the children took part in creating a song about their train journey, they made special golden tickets and also some wonderful parcel pets.
It was a lovely day and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Take a look at the wonderful photos from our day ...

Year 6 are settling brilliantly into their new, responsible roles as the oldest in the school and we are all getting used to our lovely new name, 'Copper Valley Junior Academy!'
The children have enjoyed their historical enquiry into the lives of the Anglo-Saxons and they are also proving to be enthusiastic Scientists, as we explore the fascinating Science behind 'Light'.
In English, we have been looking at the various tools and language features that make effective suspense writing and the children are currently finishing their own, innovated suspense story! We are particularly impressed with their determination to improve their handwriting!
Our RE question for this half term asks, 'What would Jesus do?" and the children have shown what deep thinkers they are, when challenged with these 'Big Questions'!
Across the two bases, we are thrilled to have been placed joint first, alongside Callington Primary Academy, for our entries to the Art competition at the Honey Fair, with one of our very own Year 6 children achieving 4th place in our age range!
In French, we have been learning how to talk about our families and in Computing, we are learning all about networks and how these work, both locally, nationally and internationally.
Year 6 have shown amazing positivity when it comes to their Maths and they have shown us what strong Reasoning skills they have! We will continue to build on their Arithmetic skills with daily practice and we are encouraging them to learn their times tables at home, as well as reading regularly.
The mornings are getting darker and the days are getting soggier, however, Year 6 will not let this dampen their spirits, as we continue to plough through this long Autumn Term, towards that time of year that cannot yet be mentioned!!
Thank you for all you hard work so far, year 6; Mrs David and Miss Cunningham are so proud of you all!

What a great week we have had in Foundation/Year 1.
We were very lucky to have a Road Safety Roadshow that taught us all about how to stay safe when we are out and about. We really enjoyed learning the dance and words to ‘Stop, Look and Listen.’ We were also taught about how important it is to stay close to, or hold hands with our adult when crossing the road. The children really enjoyed learning all things road safety!
In Phonics, Year 1 have been learning their new ‘ie’ sound. We then practised writing this in different words. In Maths, we have also been looking at one more and one less. We have been building towers and finding the correct numbers that are one more and one less!
We have also all been learning about the weather. Every morning we discuss what the weather is like and we’ve been focusing on using amazing adjectives to do this. My favourite ones this week are ‘the sun is golden’ and ‘the sea is sparkly.’ How brilliant! We have also been thinking about the right clothing we need depending on the weather.
On Friday we have our 40th birthday celebration for the school. This is going to be a great day. Please let me know if you will be attending either through email or letting me know during meet/greet.
Thank you!
